Who is the Copywriter?

Is a verbal communication specialist whose main purpose is the writing and optimisation of texts for commercial purposes. They are responsible for writing texts primarily for advertisements, brochures, scripts for commercials, advertising slogans, websites, landing pages, etc. Their primary goal is to structure a communication content that can leverage the three brains (Reptilian, Emotional, and Rational) to guide people's purchase and consumption decisions. To perform this role well, it is essential to be familiar with typical NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques.

Among the main activities that they will have to carry out are: ideating and creating communication strategies, drafting texts for articles, social media posts, newsletters, press releases, writing scripts for videos and commercials, ideating naming for new products, etc.

Basic Skills

The basic Skills that are essential for a Copywriter include:

  • Excellent persuasive writing skills;
  • Perfect command of the language, including knowledge of spelling and grammar;
  • Knowledge of advertising, marketing, and communication techniques;
  • Ability to edit and proofread drafts;
  • Familiarity with major CMS platforms (Wordpress, Wix, HubSpot, etc.);
  • Creativity and general knowledge;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, organise and manage time;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset;
  • Adaptability and flexibility.

Knowledge of NLP Techniques

To achieve the set goals and induce users to take desired actions, having NLP skills is a fundamental plus. Among the techniques to know and apply are: Rapport, Milton Model, Vak Sub-modalities, Learning State, Integration of parts and the use of the Metaphor.

Knowledge of Copywriting Areas

Transversal copywriting skills are required in the following application areas:

  • SEO copywriting, for optimising the online positioning of texts in search engines;
  • Social copywriting, for creating textual content to be conveyed on major social networks to generate engagement;
  • Web copywriting, to generate texts suitable for e-commerce, landing pages, product pages, etc.;
  • Micro copywriting, for defining technical elements of websites such as headlines, call-to-action, meta tags, meta descriptions, and title tags.

To write content in line with different styles and communicative formats, it is essential to know various writing techniques, such as:

  • Persuasive writing, to push a user to take a specific action and leverage their needs or desires;
  • Creative writing, using metaphors or textual constructions to create engaging and compelling content;
  • Technical writing, used to treat and make complex topics more accessible to the general public;
  • Formal writing, applicable for institutional texts;
  • Colloquial writing, more informal communication that can be used in confidential environments.
